Dear Amanda,

My six year old daughter is being bullied by someone at her school. This bully is being mean to my daughter, teasing her and copying her.  He said,  “yuck” when looking at her art, kicked stuff at her and has pulled back her arm. What can I do about this?

ML in Cleveland

Okay Cleveland,

Basically we want your child to have more control over the situation.  Read Good Choices Chapters 6, 7, 16, 19, 20 and 21 with her and discuss them. Have her give you some real life examples, showing that she understands them and how to use them if she encounters more bullying.

You should definitely make sure the teacher knows what is happening. I would suggest showing the teacher the Good Choices Booklet especially Chapter 19.  Tell her what you are doing with your daughter and insist the bullying stops.

Good luck, let me know how it goes!

Dear Amanda,

I am reading the Good Choices booklet with my 10 year old son. He was very interested and enjoying it until about a week ago. Now he says he has no interest and that it’s boring. Any suggestions?

JJ in Atlanta

Dear JJ,

Your son has probably run into something he doesn’t understand. Most likely a word. The best thing to do is to go back to where he was enjoying the booklet and doing well. Then make your way forward making sure he understands all the words and can give you examples of the concepts. His interest should return. Good luck!

Amanda

How to Make Good Choices is available in a “youth” version which has the same text but omits the cartoon illustrations contained in the booklet for kids. While these illustrations are very popular with younger kids, they can sometimes be considered too “juvenile” by older ones. This youth version containing the same moral guidelines but without the cartoons is more appropriate for use with teens and young adults.
